Charles Kelley, one-third of the country trio Lady A, has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, according to a video he shared on social media with his wife, Cassie, by his side. Kelley told fans he remains optimistic about his treatment team and intends to continue working and performing as he undergoes care. “Right now I feel great,” he said, adding that being on stage recently reaffirmed his desire to keep doing what he loves while prioritizing family time.
Kelley explained that a pair of unexpected rib fractures led doctors to order blood tests, one of which indicated multiple myeloma. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease develops in plasma cells in the bone marrow and can cause bone pain, fragile bones, fatigue, and frequent infections. Common treatments include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and medications. While currently considered incurable, advanced therapies can lead to long-lasting remission; between 2016 and 2022, the five-year survival rate was about 64 percent, per the source cited.
The singer said he feels hopeful about the road ahead. “I’m young. I feel healthy,” Kelley noted, emphasizing that recent advances in care have improved life expectancy. He expects the first six months of treatment to be manageable enough to allow him to keep working: “I can still work. I think physically I will feel like myself,” he said, acknowledging there will be difficult days.
Kelley also connected his outlook to lessons from his sobriety journey, focusing on taking things “one day at a time.” For Lady A listeners, his on-record update signals that the band still aims to move forward with a new record and planned Christmas shows, as he shared. Kelley’s decision to continue performing, where possible, offers clarity on near-term touring and release plans from one of country music’s most prominent groups while he begins treatment.
