EPD: Civil complaint leads to recovery of absentee ballot

Elizabethtown police arrested a man this week after allegedly finding someone else’s absentee ballot in his possession.

Elizabethtown Police made contact with the subject, Allen Hartford, in reference to a civil complaint. Police discovered that Hartford had an active warrant against him. While conducting a search of him, police discovered an absentee ballot on him, with police saying Hartford was unable to tell them for sure how he got it. Police delivered the ballot to the address listed, where the owner said he did not know it was missing, and that no one else was supposed to be in possession of the ballot. Hartford was arrested and charged with possession of stolen mail, a Class D felony in Kentucky.

He was lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

Friendly competition takes on hunger in community

A friendly rivalry between salon and barbershop will serve a good purpose in the community. The Purple Rose Salon and Andy’s Barbershop will be holding the third annual No Starve November competition all month long.

Donations can be made at the salon or the barbershop. Donors can drop off items at either location, or can have them delivered.

Wam Blessings still seeking volunteers for day shelter

With the area already starting to experience lower temperature, Warm Blessings Soup Kitchen is still looking for volunteers. The organization is looking for volunteers to help operate their yearly day shelter.

Executive Director Dawn Cash says the shelter has seen a growing need for volunteers. The first training session for volunteers is this Saturday. For more information, contact Warm Blessings

Payment options still available for utility customers

With the date for potential utility shut-offs now looming for customers with outstanding balances, Nolin RECC officials are still providing options to pay back the balances due.

Voter turnout for the 2020 election locally

With added locations and better accessibility, voters turned out for the 2020 general election locally.

In the five counties we covered, LaRue county led the way in voter turnout, with 65% of registered voters casting ballots in the election. Grayson was next with 64% voter turnout; 63% of voters in Breckinridge county voted, and just under 60% voted in Meade county. Hardin county, which is home to 90,000 voters, only saw 48,000 vote, a voter turnout of just under 54%. As a reminder, absentee ballots received by November 3rd are still being counted through tomorrow.

Local city councils will see new faces come new year

With early voting, election day voting, and a vast majority of absentee ballots in, it appears that some new faces will make up local city councils.

In Elizabethtown, Julia Springsteen looks to join the council, with all incumbents except Terry shipp winning re-election. Radcliff is expected to see 2 new members, with Toshie Murrell and Terry Owens accounting for 10.47 and 11.43 percent, respectively. And in Vine Grove, newcomers Lonnie Dennis and Selena Hudson are likely to join the council.

ECTC adds lab exclusive to coding academy

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s Greater Knox Coding Academy received a grant allowing for the development of a new coding lab.

This grant was given to the college from the Education and Workforce Development cabinet, as well as the Lincoln Trail Workforce Development Board. This is the first spot on the campus that will be dedicated exclusively to the full-time students of the coding academy.

Timeline of Glendale post office pushed back

Glendale residents hoping to receive their new post office before the big holiday season are going to have to wait a few more months.

The Postal Service says that the modular building, which was originally scheduled to be set up in mid-October, will likely now be installed in January. Dan Linker with the Glendale Lions Club says that the news isn’t quite what residents wanted to hear.

Linker says the Postal Service is still committed to the new location. The office will be located on Jaggers Road in Glendale.

Vine Grove cancels Veterans Parade, celebration this year

Vine Grove residents will have to wait another year to hold their annual veterans parade and celebration. It was announced monday that the city had canceled the event. Mayor Pam Ogden says that while the event is her personal favorite, the health risks for those involved was too great.

Ogden says the cancellation is in line with the recommendation from Governor Andy Beshear, who asked counties in the red to postpone or cancel large events. Veterans Day takes place next Wednesday.

Election Day: what to know

After months of talk and preparation, election day for the 2020 General Election is finally here.

Covid-19 has preempted the state of Kentucky to change some aspects of voting today. Surrounding counties, including Hardin, LaRue, Grayson, Breckinridge, and Meade, will have at least 3 voting centers for voters. Breckinridge county has the most voting center for election day with 7. With the centers, voters aren’t restricted to a certain location.

Hardin county voters can go to the gyms at either North Hardin High School, Creekside Elementary, and Lakewood Elementary, or the Hardin County Government Building. A full list of voting centers in the region can be found on the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website.
