John Hardin High School has won $10,000 in the second annual Altec’s Innovation Challenge.

“So with the Innovation Challenge, we’re able to connect our community and the great people of Hardin County with something that is near and dear to our heart, which is innovation. We have been making custom trucks for over 100 years. We understand the importance of STEM and bringing engineering ideas to life,” stated Challenge committee member Katy Howlett.

Ten Teams from within Hardin County, Larue County, and Elizabethtown Independent School Districts participated in this challenge, with the John Hardin FFA team taking home to top prize with their aquaculture systems that will be used to help grow aquatic organisms as a source of food for Warm Blessings Community Kitchen. “We’re here to educate the next generation, and we are excited to take this $10,000 and get started on what we’re trying to do,” stated John Hardin student Dawson Hall.
More than 45 students participated in this challenge.

Nolin RECC sent crews out early Sunday morning in response to the devastation caused by a historic winter tornado event impacting several communities throughout the state.

“Our line techs are always eager to get into these communities and help out, because they know what that extra help can mean to these co-ops struggling to make restoration. But particularly now because they are so close to home, these are co-ops that we work with a lot and so it means even more that we are able to get in and help them out,” noted Communications Manager Sarah Fellows. 

Ten lineman were sent out to both Warren County and Meade County. The length of their stay is dependent on damage assessment in the area.

Throughout the night and early into Saturday morning,  tornadoes touched down throughout the state. 

“The storms that were coming through were rolling. The tornado that hit Madisonville actually went over the top of the Vine grove area around 1:30 this morning,” stated Hardin County Chief Emergency Services Officer Bryce Shumate. While Hardin County suffered minor damage due to high wind speeds, tornadoes damaged more than a dozen counties throughout the state. “The primary tornado was on the ground continuously  for over 200 miles in our state, something we have never seen before,” noted Governor Andy Beshear. This is believed to be the most severe tornado event in the commonwealth.

With the rise in COVID-19 cases, Hardin County Schools will require masks for students, staff and guests beginning on Monday. The incidence rate in Hardin County on December 9th was 60.8.

Kentucky State Police have arrested a Taylor County man after a standoff with law enforcement. Around 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th, Post 4 Troopers were working an ongoing investigation that led them to a residence on College Street in the Buffalo Community of Larue County. One state trooper attempted to make contact with the individual at the residence, and the person made verbal treats toward the trooper’s life.

Kentucky State Police’s Special Response Team was later called to the scene, and the individual surrendered around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

42 year-old James Deslongchamps, of Campbellsville, was charged with terroristic threatening in the third degree, and menacing and resisting arrest. He was lodged in the Larue County Jail.

No one was injured during the incident.
