Tim McGraw’s Country Music Hall of Fame induction turned especially poignant when Lady A performed “Live Like You Were Dying” during Sunday’s (Oct. 18) Medallion Ceremony in Nashville, according to The Boot. Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood delivered the tribute as one of three contemporary acts honoring McGraw on the night he formally joined the Hall’s 2026 class.
The song choice carried deep resonance. McGraw recorded the ballad in early 2004 in the days and weeks after his father, former MLB pitcher Tug McGraw, died of cancer. The track went to No. 1, earned multiple industry awards, and—perhaps most importantly—became an anthem encouraging listeners to live with urgency and gratitude. That message landed with fresh weight in the room as Kelley recently shared he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable form of cancer, The Boot reports. He and his wife remain optimistic; survival rates vary, with many patients living beyond five to 10 years.
Following performances and the evening’s formalities, McGraw addressed the audience for more than 13 minutes, reflecting on his journey to Nashville and a childhood shaped by lean circumstances in Start, La., according to The Boot. He thanked family who helped him along the way, turning to his mother in the crowd: “Mamma, You have been my rock through it all. You nurtured, you provided, you endured. You are the one who stayed.” He also spoke of pride in his daughters and saluted his wife Faith Hill, adding, “The only thing that can beat this night is when you’re standing here and I’m sitting there.”
Other performers included Vince Gill and the First Ladies of Bluegrass, per The Boot. For country listeners, the moment underscores how a cornerstone McGraw single continues to echo in real lives—and how the Hall of Fame stage can spotlight the community’s bonds across generations.
