John Anderson’s last public outing arrived just three days before his death on Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to Taste of Country. The Country Music Hall of Famer, 71, attended the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Medallion Ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 18, where he was part of a group of living members on hand as Tim McGraw, Paul Overstreet and the Stanley Brothers were officially enshrined. Anderson, inducted in 2024, did not perform but was active backstage and walked the red carpet with his wife of more than 40 years, Jaime Anderson.

Photos from the evening show Anderson chatting with fellow artists and writers including Dean Dillon, Ricky Skaggs and McGraw. In a tribute posted Wednesday, McGraw said he was “completely shook” by the news of Anderson’s passing. “I was talking with John Sunday night at the HOF ceremony,” McGraw wrote, recalling that the two laughed and even sang along to Anderson’s songs together. Calling him “one of the defining voices in country music,” McGraw added that he was heartbroken by the loss.

Following the ceremony, Anderson shared what would become his final social-media post, noting that he and Jaime had a “great night” at the Country Music Hall of Fame and offering congratulations to the 2026 inductees, per the report. The timing underscores how sudden his death felt to fans and peers, given his energetic presence that weekend. For The Wolf audience, the moment resonates: Anderson’s voice and pen helped shape radio for decades, and his work remains a staple of classic and ’90s country playlists.

Anderson’s career stretched from the early 1970s, when he moved from Florida to Nashville and worked construction on the then-new Grand Ole Opry House, to his run of chart success beginning with “The Girl at the End of the Bar.” He placed more than 40 singles on the charts, including five No. 1s, and delivered signature hits like “Straight Tequila Night” and “Swingin’.” His 2020 album, Years, drew praise for its emotional clarity. He entered the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2024.
