November 5 marked the first date Kentuckians were able to sign up to run for office in 2026. Hardin County Clerk Brian D. Smith said in a Facebook post that as of the close of business Friday 27 candidates have filed to run.

Smith discussed upcoming deadlines related to the election during the October 28 Hardin County Fiscal Court meeting.

“December 31 is the next big day that people should pay attention to,” Smith said. “It’s a good time to go ahead and check your voter registration status. If you’ve moved in the last year, you want to update your address, but most importantly whatever party affiliation you choose by midnight on December 31, that’s what primary you will vote in in the following year. If you are other or independent, then you would only vote on any potential independent races that may appear in May.”

January 9 at 4 p.m. is the deadline for candidates to register for the primary election.

“There are cities (Elizabethtown, West Point, Sonora, and Upton) who opt out of the primary, and then the school boards and soil and water conservation supervisors are also not primary based, and that deadline is June 2,” Smith said.

The public drawing for ballot position will be held January 15. The deadline to register to vote ahead of the primary is April 20. The primary election will be held Tuesday, May 19.

Register to vote or check your registration status by visiting govote.ky.gov or by visiting your county clerk’s office.
