Trial Date Set for Two Locals Involved in Capitol Raid

A trial date has been set for two local men charged for actions in connection with the attack on the U.S. Capitol back in January. 

Kurt Peterson of Hodgenville and Michael Sparks of Elizabethtown were allegedly at the capitol riot that took place on January 6th. According to the District of Columbia’s Attorney’s office, both were confirmed to be there through various tips, pictures, as well as Facebook posts by both men stating that they were there.  

Sparks was arrested on January 19th, whereas Peterson was arrested on June 16th. They are both being charged with various counts of destruction of government property, and entering and obstructing restricted areas. 

Their court date is set for September 8th. Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges. 

Brett Guthrie to Host Veterans Suicide Prevention Event

U.S. Congressman Brett Guthrie will host a Suicide Prevention for Veterans training today in Elizabethtown. As the military becomes more aware of veterans mental health, local healthcare workers will need to be more prepared to help veterans dealing with trauma. 

“What we’ve done before and what we’re having is members of the (Louisville) VA Medical Center, who have expertise in this area, getting together with healthcare officials in the area to teach, but it is really marketed towards people who are social workers and do intervention. The signs and things to look for too, “ says Guthrie. 

The training will take place today at 2 p.m. at the American Legion Post 113. Everyone is welcome to attend the event.

Masks Not Required For Hardin County Schools

Hardin County Schools officially stated today that masks will not be required in the classroom for the upcoming school year. Hardin County Schools Communication Specialist John Wright says that while masks are not required, they are highly recommended for anyone entering the building.

Masks will still be required on buses, as social distancing is not possible.

East Hardin Middle to Begin School Year Virtually

The Hardin County School Board has voted unanimously that East Hardin Middle School will start the year online. The decision came shortly after hearing that the building failed to receive a fire alarm certification.

East Hardin will continue virtual learning until the building is certified to receive students. According to Superintendent Terri Morgan, the decision to begin virtually was the best of the worst options.

Traffic Update for U.S. 31W Project

Intersection closures will be taking place along southbound US 31W each night this week.

These intersections will be affected: Ring Road, Walmart Drive, Starlite Center, Startlite Drive/Towne Drive, and Childres Court.

Work will begin tonight (Monday) through Friday between 9pm and 6am.

Walmart Drive and Ring Road will be not be closed at the same time.

Elizabethtown High School Alum Competing in Olympics.

The long anticipated Tokyo Olympics are finally in full swing, and one Elizabethtown high school alum will be competing for gold.

Jada Stinson will represent Puerto Rico in women’s basketball. Stinson attended Elizabethtown high school from 2013 to 2017.

While there, Stinson was a stand-out athlete, playing in more than 130 games. She was awarded player of the game over 20 times throughout her high school career.

Stinson will get to compete in the sport she loves most on the biggest stage. She is overwhelmed with joy to compete for a country that is full of pride and love. 

ECTC to be Given $50,000 From the Band Metallica.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical college was one of a select few to receive $50,000 from Metallica’s scholars initiative. 

The initiative is funded by the band Metallica’s All Within My Hands program, a program that serves as a means to invest in communities to help them be sustainable. The program helps support students, causes to end hunger, and other critical local services. 

The new funding will provide scholarships to truck driving students in the college’s workforce solutions commercial driver’s license program as well as students in advanced manufacturing programs.

Changes to Freeman Lake to be Expected.

Changes at Freeman Lake are to be expected in the upcoming weeks after Hardin County Teen Drowned.  

19 year old Kenny Robertson drowned last week at Freeman Lake while Kayaking. 

Authorities say that Robertson was not wearing his life jacket at the time of the incident. 

Currently it is not required to wear a lifejacket when you rent a watercraft from Freeman Lake, Mayor Jeff Gregory hopes to change that. 

Gregory wants to prevent another tragedy like this from happening again by improving the rules that they currently have.

These changes are currently being talked about and will likely be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Free School Lunches to Remain for the 2021-2022 School Year.

To help ease the burden of coming out of a pandemic, many school districts are going to keep offering free lunches for the upcoming year. 

Some are also asking parents to fill out forms so that they can still have accurate data on the free and reduced lunch program.  

Hardin County Schools for example is asking all parents to fill out the Free and Reduced Lunch form.

Director of Communications John Wright says these forms will be sent home with children on the first day of school. They can also be found at Hardin.KYschools.US

Also joining Hardin County in offering free lunches is La-Rue, Grayson, Breckinridge, and Meade counties. For information on what you need to fill out for the free lunches call your local school district.

A Benefit Spaghetti Dinner is to be Held for North Hardin Student Battling Cancer.

This Saturday a benefit spaghetti dinner will be held for Damerie Lyons, a 17 year old North Hardin High School student battling bone cancer. 

There will be dinner, as well as a live and silent auction.

Lyons is currently undergoing chemotherapy and multiple surgeries for bone cancer, they hope to cover some of the cost of these bills with this benefit dinner. 

It will take place this Saturday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Vine Grove at 4 PM.
