Kenny Chesney is mourning the death of his dog Poncho, a goldendoodle who was 15. The country star shared the news in a social-media tribute, writing, “We lost Poncho at 5:15 this morning and my heart is broken but yet so full ‘cause I know he gave us all he had.” He added, “We went down a lot of roads, lived a lot of life and saw a lot of sunsets together,” according to Taste of Country.
Chesney’s post included photos of Poncho—also known as “Da Ponch”—surfing, boating and relaxing by the water, as well as an image from a 2024 Chicago stadium show where the dog joined him onstage. The singer reflected on how Poncho entered his life as a puppy when a friend told him, “Here Kenny, you need to learn to attach to something.” “I’ve heard a dog enters your life when you need it most,” he wrote. “To help you, to heal you, to show you how to accept unconditional love and give it back.”
Calling Poncho a “constant companion,” Chesney said the dog was curious, confident and “smarter than the average human.” He also noted the bond Poncho shared within his household alongside Mary Nolan and Ruby, a rescue pit bull Nolan brought into the family. “[Poncho] brought so much joy, energy, light and fun into mine and Mary’s life,” Chesney wrote. Ruby died in December 2022, according to Chesney’s previous accounts cited by Taste of Country.
The loss resonates for Chesney’s audience because Poncho became part of the singer’s public life, appearing at a major tour stop and often in photos that captured Chesney’s time on the water between shows. For fans who have followed the superstar’s music and touring, his tribute underscores the personal connections that often run alongside the songs—reminding listeners how the companions artists keep can shape the stories behind the work.
