Winter Storm Update: Breck Co. Emergency Management (Update 2) A.J. Brammer

Winter Storm Update – Breckinridge County Emergency Management

[00:00] – A.J. Brammer
From the Weather Center, I’m A.J. Brammer. On the phone with me now is Justin Frazier, Director of Breckinridge County Emergency Management. Justin, thanks so much for taking the call.

[00:11] – Justin Frazier
My pleasure.

[00:12] – A.J. Brammer
How are things looking in your area right now?

[00:15] – Justin Frazier
Right now, the county is in pretty good shape. We don’t have any reported power outages at this time. Roads are slick, especially if drivers aren’t paying close attention. The snow itself isn’t extremely slick—it’s more about navigating through it safely.

We have both state and county road crews out. State crews have been focusing on A-routes, specifically Highways 60 and 79. Their plan is to move to B-routes later tonight, and we’ll see how things look in the morning. A lot of that will depend on how far north the ice line moves.

[00:53] – A.J. Brammer
That really is the key factor right now—how much that shift happens overnight.

[00:58] – Justin Frazier
Exactly. Our projections look pretty good right now, and hopefully they stay that way. (chuckles)

[01:02] – A.J. Brammer
At this point, things may be on the lighter side of what was expected, but we know more is coming. The key message remains staying safe.

[01:18] – Justin Frazier
That’s right. I want to remind residents that Breckinridge County remains under a declaration of emergency by the Judge/Executive. That doesn’t change laws or impose restrictions, but it does signal that we want people to take this storm seriously.

Even though conditions may not look severe right now, there’s still time—though not much—to prepare. Only a few stores in Hardinsburg and Irvington are still open. We strongly encourage people to avoid unnecessary travel. Conditions will deteriorate after dark when visibility drops, and again, the ice line remains the biggest concern.

The county does have three warming centers open. Details are available on the Breckinridge County Emergency Management Facebook page, and your station has also shared that information. These warming centers are primarily for our most vulnerable residents. As long as power stays on, we should be in decent shape.

[02:14] – A.J. Brammer
Anything else you’d like to add?

[02:17] – Justin Frazier
Just a reminder to stay off the roads as much as possible. We understand some people still need to get to work, and that’s unavoidable. If you do have to travel, please give road crews and snowplows plenty of space. Plow operators deal with large blind spots.

If you see emergency vehicles, slow down gradually, don’t brake suddenly, and safely move out of the way when possible.

[02:48] – A.J. Brammer
Justin Frazier with Breckinridge County Emergency Management. Justin, thank you to you and your entire team for the work you’re doing right now.

[02:59] – Justin Frazier
Thank you, sir. I appreciate the call.

[03:01] – A.J. Brammer
From the Weather Center, I’m A.J. Brammer. Thanks for tuning in.
