Winter Storm Update w/ KY Transportation Cabinet Dist. 4 & Gov. Andy Beshear

[00:00] – A.J. Brammer
From the Weather Center, I’m A.J. Brammer with an update this morning.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District Four, reports varied precipitation across the region. Snow and sleet are falling across northern counties, while freezing rain continues farther south. Many roadways now have a fresh layer of ice on top of compacted snow. Other roads remain slushy, while some areas are still seeing new snowfall.

Road conditions are highly localized today, with significant changes possible over very short distances due to temperature differences and precipitation type. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution. For the latest road conditions and traffic camera views, visit snow.ky.gov.

Power outages are also increasing. Nolin RECC reports 485 members without power across Grayson, Hardin, Hart, and LaRue counties. LG&E reports more than 250 customers without power in local counties.

During a press conference from the State Emergency Operations Center this morning, Andy Beshear said the state has seen more ice and sleet than originally forecast. He emphasized that this is not good news.

What it means is the roads are much more dangerous, and these conditions are going to extend into next week. They will be difficult to treat due to extremely cold temperatures Monday through Thursday. While there were no major issues reported overnight, the toughest part of this storm is happening right now.

[01:21] – A.J. Brammer
Governor Beshear also said there are no reports of significant injuries or deaths related to the storm so far, and Kentuckians can help keep it that way by staying home.

If you’re off the roads, transportation crews can treat them. If you’re off the roads, first responders can reach those who need help. It is simply unsafe in nearly every part of Kentucky right now to be traveling. Doing so puts yourself and others in danger.
