Miranda Lambert is offering new perspective on how heartbreak reshaped her songwriting, revealing that she wrote roughly 75 songs in the year after her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton. The country star discussed the creative surge during an Oct. 27 appearance on songwriter Ross Golan’s And The Writer Is… podcast, calling the period “misery” that she channeled directly into music.
“I got divorced and that sucks for anyone, especially in the public eye, especially on tour, especially in the middle of a very public career — two of us,” Lambert said, noting the strain of the split and the scrutiny surrounding it. Afterward, she moved back to Nashville full-time and immersed herself in writing with longtime collaborators. “I gathered up all of my friends and relationships from, you know, all of the previous years and just used it, used the misery,” she explained. “I think I wrote 75 songs in like, a year. I mean, in like, the first four months I moved back.”
Lambert said that returning to Music City changed her approach compared to her previous album cycle, when she would write specifically toward a record before heading out of town. This time, she let life lead the process, drawing on late nights, hard feelings, and the support of her songwriter circle to shape material for her sixth studio album, The Weight of These Wings. “It wasn’t writing towards a specific record or a sound… It was, like, raw emotion, and it was worth it,” she said.
For country listeners, Lambert’s account underscores how a pivotal personal moment informed one of the most revealing chapters of her catalog. According to her, shedding the pressure to chase a defined sound opened space for deeper, more vulnerable storytelling — insight that helps explain the evolution fans heard as she moved from Platinum into The Weight of These Wings. Her comments also highlight Nashville’s collaborative songwriting community as a vital part of her recovery and creative renewal.
