Hardin Memorial Health and Doctor Larry Hall have agreed to dismiss legal actions on both sides involving the sale of Hardin Memorial Hospital to Baptist Health. Doctor Hall will be dismissing his petition for rehearing for the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and HMH will be dismissing their motion to sanction frivolous appeal. The sale was first affirmed by Hardin Circuit Court in May of 2018, and then by the Kentucky Court of Appeals in October 2018.

An Elizabethtown man was arrested early Sunday morning after striking a parked car. According to arrest citations, Elizabethtown Police received the call stating the operator seemed to be under the influence. First responding officers observed a male, later identified as Michael Lyons, and a female, Rachael Boley, leaving the scene of the incident, and with a strong smell of alcohol coming from the pair. Both failed sobriety tests, and damage to the vehicle that was struck came out to over one- thousand dollars. The two were lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center, and Lyons was charged with operating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, and criminal mischief.

Election Day is tomorrow, November 5th, and the County Clerk’s Office is reminding those who are headed to the polls to bring proper identification, such as a driver’s license, social security card, or government ID. There are over 87,000 registered voters in Hardin County. Voter specific polling locations can be found at hccoky.org.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 87 along with the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 87 in Hodgenville will be hosting a free dinner for all veterans on Wednesday, November 6th from 4 PM- 6 PM. The Legionnaires monthly meeting will follow at 6:30. The American Legion Post is located at 636 Lincoln Boulevard in Hodgenville.

Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Andy Beshear held a rally in Elizabethtown yesterday morning. Beshear was joined at Bub’s Café by fellow members of the Democratic ticket including Heather French Henry, Greg Stumbo, and Michael Bowman. Current Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin held a rally of his own at the Elizabethtown Shoney’s last week.

Students at John Hardin High School are working on a special hydroponics project. Hydroponics is a plant growing method that does not use soil, but rather mineral nutrient solutions. They will be growing bibb lettuce and pea-shoot microgreens that whey will then sell to the school cafeteria. The project is called Aquafood and was created out of a desire to empower and educate students on food security and safety. The school and district say they are very proud of not only the students, but the administration and all their work as well.

The Fourth Annual Hardin County Entrepreneurial Awards are coming up in November, and the Central Region Innovation Center is seeking nominations for the six categories, including Entrepreneur of the Year, Start-Up of the Year, and Veteran Entrepreneur of the Year. Nominations can be placed by visiting the Hardin County Entrepreneurial Awards website. Nominations are due by November 5th.

The Elizabethtown Police Department responded to a call of a child being hit by a car near Morningside Elementary School. When officers arrived, the girl was treated by Hardin County EMS, and did not need transport to a medical facility. Reportedly, the student was only bumped by the vehicle, and crews cleared the scene a little after 8 AM.

The Brandenburg Police Department has made several arrests after a video of a September 29th fight surfaced. Charges have been filed on several adults, and one juvenile. Two individuals, Lisa Rowland and Alyssa Triplett, have been arrested, and there are warrants out on several other people. Rowland serves as a bus driver for the district, but was not on duty at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College welcomed their new Director of Recruitment this week, as Sarah Berkshire stepped into the role. Berkshire comes to ECTC with experience from Heartland Communications Consultants, various media outlets, and a global advertising agency.

United Way of Central Kentucky will be presenting the iPay 5K this weekend. Registration for the race is $25 in advance, or $35 on the day of. The race will begin at 8 AM in Downtown Elizabethtown

The trial of Shawn Welsh, the Marion, West Virginia man who was tried for a death investigation surrounding a 2018 automobile crash, concluded yesterday with his sentencing. Welsh will serve four consecutive life sentences, and another consecutive 43 years for other charges. As previously reported, Welsh was found guilty on charges including murder, assault, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing or evading police, receiving stolen property, and driving under the influence. He will stay at the Hardin County Detention Center for a few weeks before being transferred to a prison.

Three Hardin County cities have been awarded discretionary funds for pavement improvements by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Vine Grove received $166,600, Muldraugh received $51,052, and West Point will receive $45,608. These funds will go towards resurfacing repairs for major roadways in the cities. The cities will be responsible for administering the work, and will be reimbursed by the Transportation Cabinet.

Kentucky State Police arrested a Louisville man operating a motorcycle over the speed limit on 31W last Friday. According to reports, Aaron Breeden was speeding, and fled when officers attempted to stop him, reaching speeds of 105 miles per hour. At one point in the pursuit, Breeden left the roadway and struck a U-Haul truck. Breeden was charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license, as well as speeding and fleeing or evading police. He is being lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

Four Kentucky State Veteran’s Centers have earned five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is the first time all the Veteran’s Centers in Kentucky earned the five-star rating. These centers are located in Wilmore, Hazard, Hanson, and Radcliff.

Reminder that trick-or-treat times for Hardin County and the city of Elizabethtown will be 5-8 PM Halloween night, rain or shine.

The Elizabethtown Police Department, in collaboration with the Kentucky Organized Retail Crime Association, made a multitude of shoplifting arrests last Wednesday and Thursday. The details of the arrests were discussed at a press conference yesterday morning. Of the 31 contacted, twenty were from Hardin County, ten were from neighboring counties, and one was from out of state. The total value of items shoplifted came out to $1967.83. The conference closed with Elizabethtown Police Officer John Thomas reiterating that this was only the beginning, and EPD is going to continue to crack down on this kind of crime.

A West Virginia man was convicted in a death investigation stemming from an automobile crash last October in Radcliff. According to the county clerk’s office, Shawn Welsh was found guilty of murder, assault, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing or evading police, receiving stolen property, and driving under the influence. The penalty phase of the trial is scheduled for today.

Kentucky State Police Post 4 welcomed three new troopers on Friday. Matt Johnson, Dylan Spencer, and John Goldsboro were among 48 cadets to graduate the training academy in Frankfort.

A proposal by Telamon Energy Solutions to install solar energy panels into the Elizabethtown Wastewater Treatment Plant was put forward at a meeting of the Elizabethtown City Council held last night. On the proposed payment plan, the $2.8 million project would be paid off in eleven years, and is expected to save the city over $4 million by the end of its twenty-five year warranty.

Current Elizabethtown Governor Matt Bevin made a campaign stop in Elizabethtown Friday morning. Bevin was joined at the area Shoney’s by fellow Republican candidates including Ryan Quarles and Elizabethtown native Daniel Cameron. Bevin’s opponent, Attorney General Andy Beshear, visited Elizabethtown the week prior.

Renovations on one of Elizabethtown’s fire stations have begun. The new fire station 2 on the south side of town is now under construction. The $3.2 million project is expected to last until June of 2020.

The city of Sonora was awarded $20,000 in discretionary funds for critical pavement improvements at a presentation at Sonora City Hall on Friday. According to a release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the funds will go towards resurfacing work on Broadway Street in Sonora, which is a main passageway through the city. The improvements are expected to benefit two churches, a business, and over ten homes. The city will be responsible for doing the work, and will be reimbursed for the project by the Transportation Cabinet.

Elizabethtown Community and Technical College will hold a special concert on Tuesday, October 29th to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The concert will feature Latin American compositions arranged for two guitars. The concert will start at 7 PM in the Science Auditorium on the college campus. This is a free concert that is open to the public.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin will be in Elizabethtown tomorrow morning with other members of the Republican ticket. Governor Bevin will be holding a meet and greet at the Elizabethtown Shoneys at 8 AM. This comes prior to the November 8th election where Bevin will go up against Attorney General Andy Beshear, who visited Elizabethtown last week.

Governor Matt Bevin along with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced yesterday that the I-65 to I-71 regional connector planning study is moving forward without the proposed routes that would have gone through Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest property. Officials with Bernheim hope this momentum carries over to the proposed natural gas pipeline that would cut through conservation lands. Elizabethtown Community and Technical College has selected the recipients for their 14th annual Distinguished Alumni Program honorees. ECTC will celebrate Todd Edlin, Dr. Nicholas Bennett Gonzalez, Rev. Jin Ming Ma, David Pace, Gina Ryan, and Kendra Scott at the Profiles of Excellence dinner at ECTC on November 14th.

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office laid out plans for mobile tax collection scheduled to begin next month. On Monday November 11, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM officials will be at the Radcliff Fire Department, then at the Vine Grove Fire Department from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, then finally at West Point City Hall from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. City of Elizabethtown taxes will be collected this year as well, and will be part of the Hardin County tax bill.

The Hardin County Clerk’s Office is reminding those who will not be in town, or are otherwise unable to make it to a polling location, that absentee voting is underway. Those who think they may need absentee voting should call the County Clerk’s office to ensure they qualify. Voters can review their registration by visiting govoteky.com.

In response to Dr. Larry Hall’s petition to the Kentucky Court of Appeals for a re-hearing, Hardin Memorial Health announced Tuesday that they will be seeking monetary damages from Dr. Hall in relation to his appeal to stop the sale of HMH to Baptist Health. Hardin Memorial has cited at least 15 costs to the hospital including a $250,000 decrease in HMH Foundation donations from the amount in 2018, inability to retain top-shelf physicians in key specialties, difficulty recruiting new physicians, and staff morale and frustration.

United Way of Central Kentucky is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program, which provides tax service for anyone making under $55,000 a year. More information can be found at unitedwayck.org or on United Way of Central Kentucky’s Facebook page.

Following a setback in the cleanup process of yesterday’s structure fire, Amazin’ Glazin’ Donuts has noted they will be closed today as well. Previously, the store was believed to be in good enough working condition following a fryer fire that shut the store down yesterday, but a post on the shop’s Facebook page states that they are still attempting to get everything in working order once more.

Two Central Hardin High School students each earned $20,000 scholarships, and placed second in a fishing tournament on the Fishing University’s Make Me a Star television show featured on the Outdoor Channel. Juniors Zach Perry and Hayden Whitsell met with television crews and started filming on October 17th. To earn a spot on the show, teams had to make posts on social media with pictures of them fishing. The two top teams who posted the most went on the show to compete with a pro angler. Perry and Whitsell made 5,004 posts, approximately 2,000 more than the show’s previous record.

Nolin RECC’s Round Up program grant fund, which comes from members choosing to round their bills up to the nearest dollar, was given to Greenspace. The money was used by Greenspace to add stone columns to new bridges at Freeman Lake, and to plant crabapple trees near one of the parks most active walkways.

The Elizabethtown Panthers boys soccer team fell last night to the Oldham County Colonels in the state soccer championship tournament by a score of 8-0. Meanwhile, the Central Hardin Bruins girls soccer team lost their game against the South Oldham Dragons by a score of 8-0.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Amazin’ Glazin’ Donuts this morning at around 6:20 AM. According to officials, a kitchen fire began in a fryer. All three employees at the shop managed to get out with no injuries. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the smoke-filled building ventilated. The business is closed for the day.

An Elizabethtown man was arrested Sunday night in the parking lot of Roses Shopping Center. According to Elizabethtown Police Officer Chris Denham reports that a man identified as Jeffery Stumpf was operating a moped in a reckless manner. After a slow-speed pursuit, Stumpf crashed into a curb and stationary car. He was later found to have a bag of what was believed to be methamphetamine on his person. Stumpf was charged with a DUI and fleeing police. He is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

At a regularly scheduled meeting last night, the Elizabethtown City Council passed an ordinance regarding rates and taxation for food trucks in the city. According to the ordinance, all mobile food vendors are required to pay, on a calendar year basis, a business fee of $250 dollars. Exemptions can be made for food trucks that only set up once a year, or only at certain events. Food trucks that do not pay are subject to fines and citations.

A Bowling Green man was arrested yesterday morning around 4:50 AM by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office for wanton endangerment and criminal mischief. According to an arrest citation, 60-year-old James Branson fired a pistol during a road rage incident. Bullets struck another occupied vehicle, causing over $1,000 worth of damage. No injuries were reported. Branson is being lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.

There will be a vaping awareness event this evening at 6 PM at the Pritchard Community Center in Elizabethtown. The Lincoln Trail District Health Department will hold a discussion on how e-cigarettes affect health, their impact on communities, and how kids are using them. Anyone connected to youth and young adults is encouraged to attend. A panel consisting of Dr. John Godfrey M.D. with Hardin Memorial Health, Melissa Phillips with Lincoln Trail District Health Department, and KY Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Youth Prevention Specialist Monica Mundy will be there to answer any questions. Light refreshments will be available.

Hardin County Animal Care and Control will be holding their third “Adopt Your Boo” event from now until Halloween. Adoption fees are dropped to $31, and all vaccines are provided. The event will be held at the Hardin County Animal Shelter located at 220 Peterson Drive in Elizabethtown. Adoption hours are Monday through Saturday 12-4 PM.

A murder trial taking place in Elizabethtown concluded last week. According to Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Teresa Logsdon, Lisa Harvey and Rick Fisher of Louisville were found guilty of murder and tampering with physical evidence in the murder of Andrew Folena of Elizabethtown. The Hardin County jury recommended a sentence of thirty years to serve for each defendant. Formal sentencing for the pair will be held on December 3rd at 10 AM.  

The Elizabethtown Fire Department responded to a house fire on Balmoral Road Friday afternoon. First responders were met by a distressed homeowner and his wife, who said their dogs were still inside. Two dogs were rescued from the home, but a third was not able to be revived after being removed from the home. The source of the fire was believed to be electrical, due to the fire originating behind an entertainment center in the home.

A Radcliff woman was arrested and charged with robbery and tampering with physical evidence. According to an arrest warrant, 22-year-old Cynthia Hayes robbed a victim of a half-ounce of marijuana, a marijuana grinder, $150 case, and a hooded sweatshirt on October 10th while an accomplice held a knife to the victim’s throat. Hayes, who is being lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center, confessed to the crime while being interviewed by Elizabethtown Police.

With the help of a citizen’s tip to Crime Stoppers, an arrest was made Friday morning. The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office was able to arrest Kevin Beard, who allegedly removed items from a storage locker without authorization on September 19th. A search warrant was issued for his vehicle and the items were identified by the victim. The tipster will receive a cash reward form Hardin County Crime Stoppers.

The Atletico Flames will be holding tryouts for high school boys and girls this Thursday, October 24th, beginning at 6 PM at John Hardin High School. They are currently seeking to fill six teams.
